Commuter life

What are the consequences of the private sphere merging into the public realm, and the public sphere morphing into private realm?

Commuter life delves into the idea of public and private space and more specifically, where it merges or overlaps. Explored through small pencil on paper sketches interwoven with thoughts, Commuter life contemplates the intensifying haze between what is private and what is public.

This idea can be interpreted on many levels; from a private conversation in a public place, to a private building encroaching on to public land…

COVID 19

It will come as no surprise that there will be little commuting done next week…

A potent word; The Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary defines commute in nine ways - involving change, exchange and travel:

Commute: To exchange for another or something else; give and take reciprocally; interchange: 2 To Change: 9 To travel regularly over some distance between one’s home and office, esp. between the suburbs and the city.

A stark metaphor for the individual and society as a whole.

Commuter life investigates the ideas of change, exchange and travel within the envelope of identity.

Change:

Our devices absorb us so much that we are unaware of our surroundings.

Comfort and security provide a platform for people to embrace public spaces and make them private.

Exchange:

What are we emotionally, environmentally and economically exchanging for our current way of life?

Travel:

The commute, everyday travel that absorbs a substantial chunk of many people’s day - this work explores what happens in this space of time.
